Make Video Screen Shots For The iPhone And iPad With Display Recorder

If you’ve ever wanted to do video recordings of actions on an iOS device screen, a recently released app called Display Recorder ($1.99) may well do the trick, and it doesn’t require jail breaking your device. Just as you can take image screenshots of your iOS device by pressing the Home and power lock buttons at the same time, you can launch Display Recorder and video record actions on your iOS device.
Display Recorder is pretty easy to use, and though there are few bugs you may have to work around, the app holds a lot of promise of getting better, and it could save you the trouble of using an external videocamera to record actions on our iOS device.

To use Display Recorder, you simply launch the app and tap the red record button. From there, you can record both video and audio of any action performed on your supported iOS device. Display Recorder works in the background, so you can close the application and video record any actions you do on screen.
To pause or stop a recording, you tap the red bar that appears when you close Display Recorder, and it will take you back to the controls where you tap the red button for pause, and the black for complete stop.
When you’re done, Display Recorder will merge the audio and video tracks and save your recording in the Recorded Items section of the app.

You can export your recordings to the Photo Library of your device, as well send it off to one of the numerous other storage file apps on your device, including of course Dropbox, Evernote, Box, and even Apple’s mobile iMovie app for some quick video editing. You can also upload directly to your YouTube channel.

I found the video recordings of Display Recorder to be better on my iPhone 4S than on my iPad 1. The recordings are not always smooth as some users may want, but they are acceptable for what the app allows you to do. On the other hand, I found the audio quality of Display Recorder not that good as on my iPhone; I could barely hear it. But when I exported it to my computer, I could hear it just fine.

Display Recorder comes with a slew of advanced preferences, including making changes to video quality, size, and orientation. You can also change the audio codec settings, sample rate and the number of channels.

Unfortunately, you can’t remove the red bar while doing screen recordings unless you go into Settings – Record Settings, and change the “Record Type to “Video Only.”

You can find instructions (including how to record screen and and sound of other applications) for Settings changes listed here on the Bugunsoft.com support page.

In one case I received the following error message when I tried opening an app called SpeechTime. Bugunsoft says that if you’re recording an app that uses OpenGLES, the video may go black. To resolve the issue, you will need to open Settings in Display Recorder, tap “Video Settings” and change “Capture Method” to “Screen Capture.” It says that the “Direct Access” method is faster than “Screen Capture” method.

Despite a few bugs and limitations which are explained on the iTunes Store page for Display Recorder, the app is a great solution for what it does. It has received several good ratings, but those that complain about the black screen during the recordings need to check out the instructions for resolving that issue.
Display Recorder is a solution that Apple will probably add to the iOS in some future upgrades. Let us know what you think the app. There’s no other non-jail break app that does video screen recordings like Display Recorder.
