Crack, Remove, Recover or Break Lost ZIP Password with PicoZIP

When I started a series of posts om How to crack Passwords, one of the post was about cracking RAR passwords. After that post, I received a few requests to ways to crack or hack the ZIP Passwords. Then I came to know that there is a huge community which uses ZIP and not RAR formats for the file compression. Hence I searched for a tool to recover or crack lost ZIP passwords and came out with the following.

PicoZIP Password Recovery Tool – Crack, Remove, Recover or Break Lost ZIP Password
PicoZip Recovery Tool is an easy-to-use program that helps you recover lost or forgotten passwords from password protected Zip files created by compression utilities like PicoZip, WinZip, PKZip, etc. It is a freeware and can be downloaded from many of the software repository sites totally free of cost.

Key features of this ZIP Password Cracker
Self-extracting Zip files are supported
You can chose Brute Force or Dictionary based recovery methods
A 650,000+ words English dictionary is included
SFX Zip files also supported
If you want to use PicZIP Password cracker as a portable password recover tool, then you can just download the installer and install to the default folder C:\Program Files\PicoZipRT. Then copy all files (except UNWISE.EXE and INSTALL.LOG) into a folder of your choice. Finally, uninstall the program. Launch the program by double-clicking on PicoRecovery.exe.

Caution: I just read this review on SnapFiles, where it no longer exists as a download

Don’t expect too much – “The program will work as advertised, but with an exception: It does NOT work with AES-encrypted ZIP archives. It does work with ZIP 2.0-compatible encryption, provided that the person who encrypted the archive was dumb enough to use a password which (a) is a meaningful word in any language, (b) is 7 characters and shorter, (c) does not contain any special characters. A password as simple as “my7good3ness” will not be retrieved either by the dictionary method (because the word AS TYPED is in no dictionary) or by the Brute Force method because id would take years.”

Whatever be the case, you can still try to use this on your password protected ZIP files. Who knows which tool is able to work, when it comes to password recovey. Many times it is a matter of chance or luck.

'Lulzsec hacker' latest to be arrested in US

A man suspected of being a member of hacking group Lulzsec has been arrested in the US, the FBI has said.
Raynaldo Rivera, 20, is accused of being involved in hacks on Sony Pictures in May and June last year, in which thousands of personal details were published online.
If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
The FBI alleged he had worked with Cody Kretsinger, a 24-year-old who pleaded guilty to hacking charges in April.
Lulzsec, an off-shoot of the Anonymous hacking collective, gained notoriety last year with a string of high-profile attacks on websites and businesses.
In the Sony hack, which the company said had cost it $600,000 (£380,000), people who had entered competitions had their personal details exposed on the internet.
Alleged members of the group have to date been arrested in the US, UK and Ireland.
'Simple attacks'
An indictment containing details of Mr Rivera's arrest was made public on Tuesday. It accused Mr Rivera and others of stealing data from Sony using a hacking technique known as an SQL injection.
The indictment said Mr Rivera had helped to post the confidential information onto the internet, and had been involved in publicising the attack on Twitter.
At the time of the attack, Lulzsec members wrote: "From a single injection we accessed everything.
"Why do you put such faith in a company that allows itself to become open to these simple attacks?"
Police said Mr Rivera covered his tracks by using a variety of pseudonyms including "neuron", "royal" and "wildicv". He is also accused of using a proxy server to further avoid detection.
Unlike Anonymous, which is a loosely organised collective of hackers and hacking advocates, Lulzsec was a defined group with its own specifically recruited members.
The group is also known in longer form as Lulz Security - where "Lulz" is a play on words of the popular internet phrase "lol", meaning "laugh out loud".
Lulzsec swoop
Several members of the group have been arrested and subsequently appeared in court.
In the UK, Ryan Cleary, 19, and Jake Davis, 18, both admitted being part of the group in June.
However, they and two others - Ryan Ackroyd, 25, and a 17-year-old boy - pleaded not guilty to other related charges.
The group's leader, a hacker who went by the name of Sabu, worked undercover with the FBI to track down members after he was arrested last year.
Sabu, whose real name is Hector Xavier Monsegur, was last week granted a six month delay in sentencing due to his "ongoing cooperation with the government". He is now set to be sentenced in February 2013.
Lulzsec claimed to have attacked News International, whose website for The Sun was defaced with a false story suggesting the newspaper's owner Rupert Murdoch had died.
Lulzsec had previously posted a story on American broadcaster PBS's website suggesting dead rapper Tupac Shakur was in fact alive.

Britain spending 11,000 pounds a day to keep WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange holed up

LONDON: It is costing a whopping 11,000 pounds a day for Britain to ensure that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy here, does not flee the country.

The final bill could be much more as the 41-year-old continues to defy extradition to Sweden where he is suspected of sexually assaulting two women.

Scotland Yard confirmed it costs 11,000 pounds every day to ensure that the Australian does not flee his bolthole at the Ecuadorean Embassy, the Daily Mail reported.

The police bill for staking out the embassy where Assange is holed up has already reached more than 1 million pounds.

Officers have been watching the property in Knightsbridge, West London, since Assange breached his bail and claimed asylum in June. They have been told to arrest him if he puts "one toe" outside.

Ecuador granted political asylum to Assange in August after he took refuge in the country's embassy in London.

Ecuadorean foreign minister Ricardo Pinto has warned Assange he could be in the embassy for a decade if he is not allowed to leave Britain.

Critics have called on the Metropolitan Police to end the costly stakeout.

London Mayor Boris Johnson confirmed the policing bill between June 20 and September 10 was 905,000 pounds.

If the costs continued at the average of 11,000 pounds a day the total would now be over 1.1 million pounds.

Last week, Foreign Secretary William Hague admitted there is "no sign of any breakthrough" after meeting his Ecuadorean counterpart Ricardo Pinto at the United Nations in New York.

The comments came after the hacking activist accused the US of persecuting WikiLeaks and torturing Bradley Manning, the soldier accused of leaking classified documents.

At least four Metropolitan officers guard the embassy, on the second floor of a block of flats behind Harrods in Knightsbridge, West London, around the clock.

They have set up a 250,000 pounds mobile command station on the doorstep of the building and occupy positions outside and in surrounding properties.

Officers from every London borough, specialist police units and undercover squads have been brought in to join the open-ended stake out.

Critics called on the police to end the stand-off but sources said the force cannot step back from its responsibilities to arrest Assange for breaching his bail.

Australian hacker-turned-activist is trying to avoid extradition from Britain to Sweden over allegations of rape and sexual assault in August 2010.

Assange fears that he may be sent to the US, if extradited to Sweden, and face charges punishable by death for publishing some 250,000 leaked American diplomatic cables.

LONDON: People working in international relations, development and other sensitive areas have been informed by the internet search giantGoogle that they could be the victims of cyber attacks from hostile governments.
Google reportedly sent messages to its users informing them of recent efforts to spy on their online history.
According to the Daily Mail, the move came after the firm detected 'tens of thousands' of new hacking attacks originating in the Middle East.
Users thought to have been targeted, saw a message attached to their accounts saying, 'Warning: We believe state-sponsored attackers may be attempting to compromise your account or computer.'
A member of Google's security team, Mike Wiacek, told the New York Times that 'tens of thousands of new users' would receive warnings that their accounts had been compromised.
